Should I change careers? The quiz

Work choices touch money, pride and who we are, so it is normal for this one to weigh on you. Your answers stay on your device; nobody else sees them.

1Have you wanted to switch for more than a year?
2Do you know which career you want to move into?
3Have you talked to at least three people who do that job today?
4Does your current field bore you, not just your current employer?
5Could you live on a lower salary for one or two years?
6Do your current skills carry over to the new field?
7Would a new employer in the same field fix most of your problem?
8Is the new career mostly about escaping, rather than something you are drawn to?
9Have you already tried the new work: a course, a side project, volunteering?

Is it too late to change careers?

No. People switch at 30, 40 and 50 all the time, and they bring experience a 22-year-old does not have. What matters is whether you can afford the bridge: the months of lower pay or study while you build up in the new field.

Test before you jump

Most career changes fail because the new job was a fantasy. Talk to people who do it, try the work on weekends, or take a short course with a real project. If you still want it after that, you will switch with confidence.

Questions people ask

How do I change careers with no experience?

Build proof: a short course, a portfolio project, volunteer work or freelance gigs. Then apply for roles that use your old skills plus the new ones, which is the easiest bridge.

What is the best age to change careers?

There is no best age. The best time is when you have savings for the transition and a tested idea of what you want.

Should I go back to school to change careers?

Only if the new career requires the degree. Many do not: check job ads and ask people in the field before you spend the money.
